Certainly, before the Erik ten Hag era, that wasn't the case within the club. Jose Mourinho handed McTominay his debut, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer spoke about how he was the embodiment of United's values and Ralf Rangnick identified him as a future captain of the club.
Even Ten Hag repeatedly relied upon McTominay, despite him almost leaving the club on a few occasions under his spell in charge.
But with United's rebuild under the Sir Jim Ratcliffe era taking hold this summer, it was inevitable there would be departures. And with the sales of academy graduates representing true profit when it comes to combating profit and sustainability rules, McTominay's sale almost felt inevitable towards the end of the window.
