Constitutional crisis? Bitter battle as US looks set to roll back abortion rights
Abortion would still be legal in many states, but Justice Alito goes beyond a case that revolves around Mississippi's decision to ban the termination of pregnancies after 15 weeks. He evokes the constitution in calling to "return the issue to the people's elected representatives." Otherwise put, states’ rights would trump those of the federal government.
In a nation where nearly six in ten citizens support legal abortions, how will total bans go down? How aggressively will more conservative, rural jurisdictions enforce the ban? More broadly, can the United States lay claim to a moral high ground on the world stage when it is at war with itself on matters of liberty, privacy and women's rights?
