'Complete chaos' in the airport baggage hall with holidaymakers told their suitcases would be delivered to them at home...next week

Scores of returning holidaymakers were forced to leave Manchester Airport without their luggage and were told it would be delivered to them....next week.

Whilst others had to wait over five hours for their suitcases and resorted to sleeping on the baggage carousel.

In a scene described as 'complete chaos' travelers say staff advised them the wait times would be so long they could leave without their bags and they would be sent to their home address. However, they were told it could be as long as three or four days before they were reunited with their luggage.

It meant abandoned bags and prams began piling up around the baggage reclaim hall of the airport's newly refurbished Terminal 2 which several angry passengers have now said 'made a mockery' of security measures.

The airport said it was the result of 'issues experienced by one of the handling agents' and have apologised for the inconvenience caused to passengers.

Tracy Williams, 55, landed on a Tui flight from Fuerteventura at 1am in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) with daughter Evie, 14.

She said when she came into baggage reclaim there were already two other flights who were still waiting for their bags to appear and that 'hundreds' were already piled up around the hall.

"I just thought it was absolutely outrageous. These are people's belongings, you know" she said.

And she said frustration grew as the wait times for the bags got longer and people were advised to fill in forms and leave.

"There were distraught kids all over the place, people who needed medication that was in their bags.

"There was just one stafff member at the desk who was having to deal with it all.
