Colombia 0-1 Peru: Flores earns visitors stunning qualification win

Colombia suffered a sixth successive shut-out as resilient visitors Peru earned a memorable late win in World Cup 2022 Qualifying on Friday.

Substitute Edison Flores raced clear on the left, entered the penalty area and beat Napoli goalkeeper David Ospina at his near post with a low shot in the 85th minute to settle a tight contest at the Estadio Metropolitano. 

Porto livewire Luis Diaz, who is being strongly linked with a move to Liverpool, was unable to break the deadlock as Colombia had the better of play before the goal.

The 25-year-old went on one mazy run towards the end of the first half and sent a shot comfortably over the crossbar with around ten minutes to go as Colombia endured their second defeat on that six-game run. 

Former Everton midfielder James Rodriguez also had plenty of possession without being able to fashion a meaningful opening.

Rodriguez, who now plays for Al-Rayyan, came closest when he thundered a strike wide during seven minutes of additional time.

Brighton midfielder Steven Alzate almost changed the course of a frustrating game for his country, seeing his whipped second-half cross from inside the penalty area almost deflect beyond Pedro Gallese, who made a superb reflex stop to parry the danger behind.

Peru had only two shots at goal compared to Colombia's 20, and Gallese made several fine saves to keep his team in the game. 

The result increases the pressure on Colombia boss Reinaldo Rueda with only three matches of their qualifying campaign remaining.

The win was the third in a row for Peru, lifting them on to 20 points and fourth place in the 10-team South America section, a point ahead of Uruguay.
