Collie O'Neill at the helm as Shamrock Rovers confirm WNL entry

Shamrock Rovers has confirmed it will compete in next season's Women’s National League (WNL), subject to a successful licence application to the FAI.

The Hoops have appointed Collie O’Neill, who led UCD to the men’s First Division title in 2018 and has had coaching spells at Shelbourne, Dundalk, and Dublin City, as their head coach.

"It’s a great privilege to be at the biggest club in Ireland," O’Neill said.

"I’m looking forward to the challenge of delivering on the expectation that comes with managing at such a big club. It’s an exciting challenge to put a new team together, but it’s made easier by some of the work that has gone into Rovers’ women’s section over the last few years, these players are our future."

Rovers currently have two teams in the WNL at U17s and U19s and has also just started a new girls development academy.

It follows on from yesterday’s announcement that Galway United will also compete in next year’s WNL following Galway WFC’s decision to withdraw from the league.

Galway United will also be entering U-19 and U-17 girls teams in 2023.
