Cole Palmer would face same problems as Raheem Sterling if he swapped Man City for Chelsea

Manchester City looked to wrap up two loose ends by verbally agreeing a deal to sign Matheus Nunes, while Tommy Doyle will head in the opposite direction to Wolves on loan in a separate deal.

City wanted to sign a new midfielder after the injury to Kevin De Bruyne, with Nunes set to sign for a decent fee (£47m) considering three midfielders have gone for £100m this summer, and West Ham were looking for around £80m for Lucas Paqueta. It takes City's spending this summer to £205m.

In terms of incoming, City have just over £100m in the bank, with the potential for more sales before the end of the transfer window. Doyle can add £5m if he makes his loan permanent in the future, while Taylor Harwood-Bellis could also leave with a reasonable £15m valuation.

Then there is Cole Palmer, who is suddenly wanted by Chelsea with just two days left of the transfer window. While he could bring the net-spend closer to zero, Stamford Bridge doesn't seem like the best destination for him to kick on.

By his own admission, Palmer wants to play this season, preferably at City. After scoring in the Community Shield and Super Cup, he said: "I just want to play regularly, like lots of minutes and stuff so we will see. I just want to play football. So whatever the best decision is when we speak together, that is what I will do."

He also said - before City signed Jeremy Doku and moved for Nunes - "obviously the best scenario is to stay at City and play but obviously you know what the competition is like - if they bring someone in… I don’t know."
