Coffee shop with queues down the street to open new Manchester city centre site

Federal, the Antipodean-inspired coffee shop and brunch peddlers, are to open a third site in the city. The new spot will be found on Circle Square, the development that was formerly the BBC on Oxford Road.

They announced the ‘big news’ in a post to Instagram. “We’re so so excited to let you all know about our 3rd Manchester location!” they said. “We can’t wait [to] open the doors and start serving our coffee & brunch on Oxford Road.”

The new site will be opening in the autumn, with more news in the pipeline. For now, the unit is emblazoned with a picture of a kiwi bird with its beak in a coffee cup, a nod to owner Claudio Ribeiro’s homeland of New Zealand. It will join the likes of Hello Oriental, Canvas and Tahi, another New Zealand concept, at Circle Square.

The first Federal opened in the Northern Quarter in 2014, with some of the best coffee in the city accompanied by all-day brunch, smoothies, juices and pastel del nata, the Portuguese custard tarts. Queues still snake from the door of a morning, and weekends can see waits of up to an hour for a table.

It then opened a second, much larger site on Deansgate in 2019.
