Clubs vote today for VAR, but will it make a difference?

Today, the 42 member clubs of the SPFL will take part in a vote for the introduction Video Assistant Referees (VAR). If 75% of the clubs from each division vote yes, then VAR will most likely be introduced in the aftermath of the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

After Sunday’s Scottish Cup semi-final, you begin to wonder if VAR will make a difference at all?

When you look back at Bobby Madden’s performance, how would VAR have changed or influenced the outcome of that game?

Yes, for the Ibrox side’s second goal, the question whether it was offside or not could have been asked. But could you have trusted Madden to make the right call even if it was?

Madden’s persistent break up of play – which now seems to be his M.O. any time we play a match he is involved in – is not something VAR would help us with.

This is something he continuously does when he is officiating games we play in and it’s becoming clear the opposition is fully aware of this before they ever play us.

The Ibrox side knew he would do this last Sunday, so they built their game plan around that. They also knew he would allow them to get away with bad fouls consistently and that no real punishment would be forthcoming.

The simple fact is they knew this before they ever took to the field of play. In fact they knew this the day Madden was named the match referee.

Madden’s blatant trolling of Celtic in the aftermath of the game with his “Happy Easter” Instagram post, was his way of letting everyone know exactly who he was working in favour of last Sunday.
