Clinton Morrison says ‘brilliant’ Archer has been ‘outstanding’ on loan at Preston

Cameron Archer has impressed for Aston Villa at youth level and briefly in the first-team, but he needed more senior opportunities to continue his development, so a loan move was devised for the 20-year-old to get more competitive football.

Archer was loaned out to Preston North End in January for the remainder of the season and has made an instant impact in the Championship which should delight Steven Gerrard. The 20-year-old has scored two goals in four games for Preston, so things are going very well at Deepdale.

Clinton Morrison was full of praise for Archer recently, saying on EFLonQuest: “Archer, that’s four games and two goals, he’s been outstanding to be fair, he’s been brilliant. His all-round game today was brilliant. What I like about him, he always shifts it, he wants to have a shot.”

“But his goal in particular is one I really like. This is brilliant, what makes it is the touch, because it’s a difficult ball, it’s bobbling in but the touch is instant and it’s a brilliant finish. His manager will be pleased with that because Ryan Lowe could finish like that too.”

Archer scored 16 goals with seven assists from 35 games for the U23s and scored four goals from six games for the first-team. The 20-year-old looks to have a bright future and will hope to be a regular fixture back at Villa next season.

He’s currently behind Danny Ings and Ollie Watkins in the pecking order but is ahead of Keinan Davis, so there’s every chance that Archer could stick around at Bodymoor Heath if he continues to impress at Preston. Next up for the Lilywhites is a home clash with Huddersfield Town on Wednesday, February 9.
