Christian Eriksen’s long-term future close to being finalised despite fears over top-six intervention

Brentford are reportedly confident of extending Christian Eriksen’s contract beyond this summer, as long as a top-six club does not show interest in the Denmark playmaker.

The 30-year-old signed a six-month contract with the west London club back in January. That was after returning to professional football having suffered a cardiac arrest while representing Denmark at last summer’s Euros.

The former Tottenham midfielder was forced to leave Inter Milan due to rules in Italy. Their conditions state that players cannot compete with fitted defibrillators.

He has made three appearances for the Bees so far and grabbed an assist in the 2-0 win over Burnley. Eriksen also made a scoring return to Denmark colours in a weekend defeat to Holland, before also notching a 3-0 win over Serbia on Tuesday night.

The Times reports that while Brentford have yet to make a formal offer to Eriksen, they are believe they are in a strong psoition to get one done.

They hope that a sense of loyalty, plus the chance to keep working alongside three Danish compatriots in Thomas Frank, Christian Norgaard and Matthias Jorgensen will make all the difference.

The report adds that Eriksen will wait until the end of the season before making a decision.

The Bees are currently in a relegation at the wrong end of the Premier League table. They do, however, have some breathing space and are eight points clear of 18th-placed Watford.

Thomas Frank’s men face European-chasing West Ham this weekend.
