Christian Eriksen could have new role when Manchester United complete first summer signing

Manchester United's midfield looks set for the biggest revamp this summer, with a number of players up for sale and at least one new addition wanted there as well.

We are only one week into the window and yet the club have already sanctioned the sale of Zidane Iqbal to FC Utrecht and will listen to offers for Fred, Scott McTominay and Donny van de Beek.

Erik ten Hag is pushing for the signature of Mason Mount as he targets younger players this summer, and in an ideal world he would add another top-class midfielder to his pool of options.

That wish could rely more on a successful takeover than player sales, though United are looking at players across a number of budget options depending on what happens in the coming weeks.

Mount's proposed arrival is certainly an interesting one to consider, particularly regarding where he would fit into the matchday squad most weeks.

Ten Hag is understood to be an admirer of the 24-year-old's ability to contribute offensively and defensively, not only as a fine passer of the ball, but one who has a keen eye for goal as well.

Mount would effectively be the long-term replacement for Christian Eriksen, as well as a viable alternative to Bruno Fernandes in the more advanced role next season.

If they can reach a compromise with Chelsea over a suitable valuation, then a transfer should be easy to complete, and in doing so, they would not only gain another quality addition to their side, but it could help bring the best out of those already at the club as well.

The biggest change is that United would have a much more obvious replacement for Eriksen in the starting line-up, which would reduce their reliance on him as an attacking option.
