Christian Eriksen can be catalyst to help ‘change the culture’ at Manchester United, says pundit

Christian Eriksen can be a success and “help change the culture” at Manchester United, according to Noel Whelan.

The Denmark international looks all set to join Erik ten Hag’s Old Trafford revolution. According to a number of sources, including The Athletic and Sky Sports, the veteran has verbally agreed to join United.

He was out of contract after his six-month deal at Brentford expires. The Bees were desperate to retain the 30-year-old after rescuing his career in January.

Tottenham were also understood to be interested in their former midfielder after Antonio Conte laid the groundwork in February.

The Italian boss said a return to Spurs  “would be a good opportunity for him, for me, for the club”.

However, Spurs’ interest faded, Instead they focused on targets elsewhere. That left Eriksen with a straight choice between Brentford and United.

Former Leeds striker Whelan says he was surprised that Eriksen did not return to Tottenham.

“I felt that his decision could come down to family or having already put down roots in London,” Whelan told Football Insider.

“But look, there’s a challenge that he wants to take up at Man United. They’re a massive club.

“Brentford gave him that lifeline and the opportunity to prove himself to everyone – and he put in performances worthy of playing for Man United.

“I don’t think anyone can begrudge him that decision. They’re still a massive club and they’re rebuilding and trying to change the culture. And he can be a part of that.

“I’m sure that he will bring something to Manchester United because of the quality he can provide in that midfield area.”

The former Inter Milan man made a staggering recovery since having a cardiac arrest on the pitch at Euro 2020 last June.
