Tests are being downgraded to glorified training sessions. The Six Nations and the autumn series are mere development tools. It is all about the World Cup.

That was the clear message after this latest defeat at the end of another ill-fated championship campaign. The Red Rose-tinted view is that there is no need to worry because it will all fall into place when it really matters.

But this really matters too. French euphoria reinforced the value of this cherished tournament, especially the holy grail of a Grand Slam. There should be English anger about being miles off the pace again and there is, but not in areas of influence.

The rugby public care deeply about success in this annual showpiece, but apparently the powers that be at Twickenham do not. Another Six Nations let-down is being tolerated, because it is all about the World Cup.

In fact, the RFU on Sunday heralded evidence of 'solid progress' within a vote of confidence which beggared belief. It's a wonder they haven't arranged an open-top bus parade.

RFU chief executive Bill Sweeney should want to reassure concerned fans and sponsors, but the preferred strategy is to lie low and let storms blow over.

Last year, there was a forensic inquest after England finished fifth, leading to a raft of proposals, none of which involved the removal of Jones. Third place this time suggests an improvement but three defeats suggests otherwise.
