Children's home where kid came back drunk after sneaking out is allowed to reopen

A children's home in south Manchester which was shut down after a child snuck out in the early hours of the morning to go drinking is now allowed to reopen. The home, which Ofsted has not named, was rated 'inadequate' by inspectors just two months after opening.

Responding to the damning report in August, Blue Kite Children Care Limited - a private company based in the West Midlands which runs the home - said that it was investing in staff training and making improvements. A new report published by standards body Ofsted on Friday (October 27) revealed that eight new staff had been recruited by the end of September to support the existing team.

The report lists a number of measures put in place since the initial full inspection in July. The suspension notice has now been lifted.

It comes after a monitoring visit in August when inspectors found that, despite some improvements, the provider had not taken sufficient action and there was still no manager in post at the time. The suspension notice remained in place following the visit.

However, following another visit on September 26, inspectors concluded that sufficient steps had been taken to allow the home to reopen. This includes appointing a new manager who has a 'clear understanding of the previous shortfalls' identified in the summer.

According to a report published on August 10, inspectors found 'significant shortfalls' in safeguarding, leadership and management arrangements at the home. The report said: "Safeguarding practice is not robust and is ineffective.
