Chennai Open: Nadia Podoroska shows Eugenie Bouchard the door

Much like her game against Maria on Thursday where she lost the opening set, the 25-year-old from Argentina suffered starting trouble against the 2014 Wimbledon finalist. Eugenie called the shots in the first set by breaking Nadia in the first game. Within the first 10 minutes, Eugenie had raced to a 3-0 lead.

The score soon read 4-0 in the Canadian's favour. It was only in the fifth game of the first set that Nadia won her first game. However, Eugenie wrapped up the opening set 6-1 in 38 minutes.

Nadia made a turnaround in the second set and broke Eugenie twice to open up a 3-1 lead. Nadia broke Eugenie in the 5th game to enjoy a 4-1 lead. However, Eugenie --- who took a medical timeout after that game --- made a comeback as she broke Nadia in the 6th game and subsequently held serve as the second set read 4-3.

Nadia won the 8th game to have a 5-3 lead. Eugenie held her serve in the 9th game and had three break points in the 10th game but failed to convert it as Nadia sealed the second set 6-4. In the decider, it was Nadia --- ranked 298th in the world --- who took charge and was leading 3-0 when play was suspended for 35 minutes due to lightning and light rain.

Despite the break, Nadia didn't seem to lose momentum and went on to wrap up the third set 6-2 and move into the last-four stage of the competition. "She had a great beginning to the match and I was making a lot of mistakes in the opening set. Maybe I was nervous in the first set as I was tired (after the match against Maria on Thursday).
