Chelsea v Barcelona 2009: Footage of UCL semi-final shows new side to 'robbed' narrative

The 2009 Champions League clash between Chelsea and Barcelona will always be one of football’s most infamous matches.

It was Barcelona who would book their spot in the final after a tempest of controversy engulfed Stamford Bridge following a glut of questionable refereeing decisions.

By the end of that ill-tempered second-leg, Chelsea’s fans and players alike were in a truly foul mood so, when Andres Iniesta snatched a last-gasp winner, things turned very bitter very quickly.

Who can forget the sight of Didier Drogba yelling down a camera lens as staff and teammates attempted to drag him from the pitch?

It has long been considered one of the greatest robberies in football history, with even the referee himself admitting that he had a game to forget.

Highlights packages of that thunderous night in west London regularly do the rounds on social media to the point where fans could name each and every decision that went wrong off the top of their heads.

However, new footage has emerged of the first leg that perhaps proves the whole, ‘Chelsea were robbed’ narrative simply isn’t true.

In the footage, a number of moments are compiled showing that Chelsea were lucky to go into the second leg level pegging with the Spanish giants.

From dodgy offsides to hare-brained challenges and stone-wall penalties, the footage does shine a light on the other side of the story.

Even in that aforementioned second-leg, Barcelona had their share of decisions go against them.

Now, of course, we still stand by the fact that Chelsea bore the brunt of the awful decisions, but it is fascinating to remember the other side.
