Chelsea star's agent fumes at players being 'trapped' following latest transfer sanctions

One Chelsea player’s agent has hit out at the UK Government handing out sanctions on the club that bans them from buying or selling players.

Russian owner Roman Abramovich put Chelsea up for sale last week but today his plans to cash in have been put on hold after the UK Government froze his assets amid his alleged links to Russian president Vladimir Putin, who ordered the invasion of Ukraine last month.

The sanctions mean Chelsea can no longer sign or sell players and with some out of contract in the summer it’s created plenty of concerns within the club.

According to Get French Football News, the agent of a French-speaking player texted the account, saying: ‘How can they ban the club from selling players?

‘Surely there are employment law implications for players who were due to leave now essentially being trapped?’

The player is not named by the French publication but there will be plenty of Chelsea stars whose futures now appear uncertain following the sanctions.

The sanctions are currently in place until May 31, 2022 and could potentially be extended, meaning the Blues are currently prevented from negotiating new contracts for their players.

Chelsea currently have nine players out of contract come the end of the season including three first-team regulars – captain Cesar Azpilicueta, Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen.

Ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Norwich this evening, the club released a statement confirming they are seeking urgent talks with the Government.
