Chelsea owner Todd Boehly copies Liverpool and Man City with Thomas Tuchel decision

Todd Boehly, Chelsea’s new owner, has told Thomas Tuchel that he will be given full autonomy on the club’s transfer business as the Blues move away from their previous model and closer to that seen at Manchester City and Liverpool.

The American views Tuchel as Chelsea’s biggest asset and feels that Liverpool and City have shown the benefit of giving the manager full oversight of transfers.

Previously, Chelsea have viewed the manager as a ‘coach’ and though he’s been given an advisory position on transfers, players tend to be signed for the club rather than for the man in charge.

Never has this been more clear than the £97m arrival of Romelu Lukaku last summer.

The Belgian is not a natural fit for how Tuchel wants to play at Stamford Bridge and he’s expected to leave this summer, whether on a permanent or temporary basis.

But the Telegraph say deals like that could now be a thing of the past with Tuchel being given the final say on transfers, like Klopp and Guardiola.

Tuchel will be given around £200m to spend how he sees fit, with the German keen to sign a striker, a central midfielder and at least one central defender.

This shift away from Chelsea’s previous model has gone down well with Tuchel, whose future at the club had looked precarious after the sanctions placed on Roman Abramovich.
