Chelsea: 'Not everybody was happy' with £325k-p/w star's Stamford Bridge arrival

Chelsea‘s decision to re-sign Romelu Lukaku was one that “not everyone at the club was happy with”, according to transfer insider Dean Jones.

The £325,000 per-week striker made a sensational return to Stamford Bridge for £97.5m last summer, but his second spell in west London turned out to be extremely forgetful.

When Lukaku became the second–most expensive incoming player in Premier League history, many thought that he could prove the missing piece of Thomas Tuchel’s puzzle.

Chelsea had just won the Champions League, while Lukaku was on the back of an exceptional campaign with Inter Milan, so expectations were understandably high.

Lukaku lived up to the early-season hype by scoring three times in his first two appearances back in the Premier League, but his goal against Arsenal and brace against Aston Villa would be the high point of his season.

Overall, he would start just 16 top-flight games and scored only eight times in total, with his record in all competitions an underwhelming 15 goals in 44 outings.

Lukaku ended up finding the net just three more times than Reece James and only two more than midfielder Jorginho, highlighting his struggles upon his return to English football.

As a result, Lukaku’s brief spell back at Chelsea came to an end when he returned to Inter on a loan deal earlier this month.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “Not everybody at the club was happy with the decision to bring Lukaku back, and at the end of the day, Roman Abramovich wanted him, Marina Granovskaia helped him do it and it happened. It could have worked out brilliantly, but it didn’t.”
