Chelsea news: Kepa decision explained as Didier Drogba hails Club World Cup inspiration

Chelsea's iconic former goalkeeper Petr Cech has said it was a "hard decision" to leave Kepa Arrizabalaga out of the Club World Cup final for Edouard Mendy.

Mendy's commitments for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations opened up opportunities for Kepa at the start of 2022.

The Spaniard, who has largely struggled for the Blues, produced some fine displays too, including one in the semi-final win over Al-Hilal.

Nevertheless, it wasn't enough for him to keep his place and Cech, who is now technical director for the Blues, provided his assessment of the situation.

"We chose to go with Edou because he’s our number one goalkeeper, he came over here, trained and is fit," he said. "I think it’s a hard decision to make but he’s our number one, he plays."
