Chelsea: Frank Lampard's incredible Didier Drogba assist vs Man City in 2007

Today is Frank Lampard’s birthday.

The former Chelsea star is one of the most iconic players of the Premier League era and is undoubtedly one of the finest players we’ve ever seen grace the game.

So much so, that when Sky Sports ran a poll upon John Terry’s retirement in 2017 as to who the greatest Chelsea player of all-time was, Lampard ran out a clear winner with over 36,000 votes.

Terry could manage second, although he had more than 11,000 votes fewer than Lampard.

Which just goes to show how adored the legendary midfielder was.

Lampard was known best for one thing, and you know what we’re about to drop on you… goals.

The explosive central midfielder was a genius at timing his runs so that he arrived in the penalty area at the perfect time to score.

And his ability to slot the ball home when in place, well, that too was unrivalled.

His tally of 177 Premier League goals makes him the sixth highest scorer in the competition’s history.

Which is a serious feat, when you consider that the next highest scoring midfielder (Steven Gerrard) lies in 20th place overall with 120 successful strikes.

Although, it wasn’t just his unholy level of goalscoring that allowed Lampard to clinch three Premier League titles, four FA Cups and a Champions League with Chelsea.

No, he was so much more than that.

He was also a fabulous playmaker and all-round midfielder.

A fact which was brilliantly proven when Chelsea played Manchester City in the 2007/2008 season and thrashed them 6-0.

Lampard was in exquisite form and registered what was arguably the greatest of his 102 Premier League assists with a beautifully crafted pass for Didier Drogba.

Simply sublime.
