Chelsea: 18-year-old 'impressing Potter in training' at Stamford Bridge

Chelsea star Carney Chukwuemeka has been impressing Graham Potter in training, according to journalist Simon Phillips.

The teenager made the switch from Aston Villa in the recent transfer window and while he’s still waiting to make his senior Blues debut, Phillips believes he’s still catching the new manager’s eye.

Despite making just a handful Premier League starts for his boyhood club, Chelsea still made the decision to pay £20m for the 18-year-old’s services this summer.

In fact, the midfielder played less than 300 minutes in the top-flight last season, although he shone at the Under-19 European Champions, helping England win the title by scoring twice and registering two assists in five games.

Some five weeks later, Chukwuemeka arrived at Chelsea and has been part of the first-team ever since, although he’s yet to get on the pitch.

But Chukwuemeka has been on the bench on four occasions, which suggests that his first outing for the west Londoners might not be too far away.

He told GIVEMESPORT: “He’s been one of the names I’ve been given when I’ve asked who’s impressing Potter in training at the moment.

“Chukwuemeka has been given to me every time I’ve asked, so he’s obviously standing out in training. He scored those two goals in the game against Brighton, and he actually only came on at half-time, so he scored them in one half.”

Despite Chelsea’s hectic schedule ramping up at the beginning of next month, Chukwuemeka is still competing against established international players for a starting place, which means that regular game-time is always going to be hard to come by at Stamford Bridge.
