Cheetahs fight back in Cape Town to top Currie Cup log

The Cheetahs won 26-17 despite trailing 14-12 at half-time.

Andre-Hugo Venter opened the scoring for the hosts in the 15th minute, with Kade Wolhuter slotting the conversion.

The Cheetahs replied with Gideon van der Merwe scoring from close range.

Blitzboks star Angelo Davids crossed the whitewash with Wolhuter making no mistake with the conversion. 

Reinhardt Fortuin found a gap and scored a try for the visitors with Ruan Pienaar slotting the conversion as the Cheetahs trailed 14-12 at half-time.

In the second half, Wolhuter slotted a penalty to score the first points of the stanza before the Cheetahs fought back.

Louis van der Westhuizen powered through as the Cheetahs crossed the whitewash to obtain the lead.

Pienaar slotted the conversion and a penalty try sealed the Free State Cheetahs' win and saw them climb to the top of the Currie Cup standings.

In next weekend's Currie Cup action, the Cheetahs host the Sharks on Friday, 21 April (14:30), while Western Province face the Pumas on Friday (16:30).
