'Cheated on' - Aston Villa suffer late heartbreak against Chelsea

Aston Villa manager Carla Ward likened her side’s last-gasp 1-0 defeat against Chelsea to finding out "you've been cheated on".

Both sides had chances to score but the first half ultimately ended goalless thanks to two strong performances from the Chelsea and Villa goalkeepers at Kingsmeadow.

And both sides looked set to share the spoils as full time approached, but Sam Kerr's stoppage time winner rescued three points for Chelsea.

The result means the Blues still have everything to play for as they look to chase down Arsenal at the top of the Barclays FA Women's Super League table with a game in hand, while Villa sit in 10th.

Ward said: "Absolutely gutted. Gut-wrenching sums it up. It's like that moment you find out you've been cheated on, as that goal goes in.

"Your whole stomach drops. There is genuinely devastation among the group.

"Some people will go: 'You've done brilliantly. You got beat 1-0 by the champions'.

"No, I think we deserved a point today."

The best chance of the first 90 minutes came in the 51st , when a double save from Hannah Hampton denied Chelsea the opener.

Kerr's low shot forced a good block from the Villa keeper, and she then produced another fine stop from Guro Reiten's instinctive follow-up.

Finally, Kerr opened the scoring at the start of six minutes of injury time when she dinked the ball over Villa keeper Hampton after a long ball.

Ward remained impressed by her determined squad despite leaving the capital with no points.

She said: "We're in a good place, we fancied it. We're absolutely gutted.
