Chatham Town take on Barnet at the Bauvill Stadium on Tuesday night as Kevin Hake's men look to build on their pre-season victory against a Gillingham XI

Chatham Town boss Kevin Hake believes his side are in a strong position heading into the final stages of pre-season.

Alex Giles scored the only goal of Friday night's friendly with a stunning long-range effort as Chatham edged Gillingham's youngsters 1-0. That followed up a victory over Dorking Wanderers.

The Chats now face another Football League test on Tuesday night (7.30pm) when they host a Barnet XI.

While Barnet's first team play MK Dons on the same evening, Hake is still expecting a competitive challenge from the Bees.

Reflecting on Friday's success, Hake was pleased with the standard of opposition Gillingham provided.

He said: "Hopefully, Gillingham got what they wanted out of it - we certainly did. I was pleased that they brought a fairly strong side down, first, second year pros. A young team but very good and they've got a good future.

"Gillingham are a full-time team. They're all wanting to impress their Gaffer and I think some of them are certainly going to be knocking on the door.

"I know a lot of them at the back end of last season got a bit of league experience, which was good to see, and it was a really good, strong test for our lads, so it was nice."

Several of the Gillingham players involved had also featured in friendlies against Millwall earlier in the week and Brentford B the following day, underlining the depth available to Ainsworth.

Hake said: "That shows the level of strength and depth that they've got.

“It was really good to put a good test on because you arrange these fixtures, and sometimes you don't really want to be playing the under-18s, but it's a good thing we've got going on with Gills, they bring down a strong team. It was a good test and it was a pleasing result."
