He may walk around in flashy suits showing off his Hollywood smile, but the hardships Charles Oliveira has overcome in his career date back to his time as a youngster growing up in the Sao Paulo slums.
Oliveira was due to make the second defence of his lightweight title tonight when he takes on former interim titleholder Justin Gaethje at UFC 274. In a compelling clash of styles, the title fight is one of the most exciting in recent years at 155lb, but after failing to make weight yesterday, Oliveira has been stripped of his title.
But the hearts of fight fans melted when Oliveira finally won a UFC title last year, with the Brazilian being one of the few fighters in the promotion to rebound from several losses to win a world title. His life story has been nothing short of fascinating and all signs pointed against a successful career.

Oliveira was born into a poor family and lived in the slum of Vicente de Carvalho in Guaraja, Brazil. He was raised in a house with one bedroom, living room and bathroom despite being one of six people living there.
