Champions League final: Liverpool and Real Madrid players receive brutal L'Equipe ratings
Real Madrid clinched the Champions League title last night with a 1-0 victory over Liverpool at the Stade de France, courtesy of Vinicius Junior’s second-half strike.
The Brazilian’s goal after 59 minutes ended Liverpool‘s hopes of finishing the season with a treble of trophies, having already won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup.
It was the Reds who brought the game to Los Blancos for the majority of the evening, but a combination of poor finishing, defensive solidity and a heroic display from Thibaut Courtois in the Real Madrid goal condemned them to another Champions League final loss, stopping them in their pursuit to avenge the 2018 final defeat.
Victory for Carlo Ancelotti’s side put the icing on the cake for an exceptional Champions League campaign that saw them overcome the odds against Paris Saint-Germain, Chelsea and Manchester City.
Real looked down and out at one point in each of the various knockout rounds, going to extra time in the last eight and four clashes against Chelsea and City, but powered through and showed their experience in a mature display on Saturday.
With the dust settled and Real crowned champions of Europe for a 14th time, French outlet L’Equipe have released their player and manager ratings for the final, which have surfaced on Reddit. L’Equipe have garnered a reputation for their ratings over the years, infamously proving an incredibly harsh marker in the past.
You won’t be surprised to hear that hasn’t changed for the final. L’Equipe have pulled no punches when it comes to rating both Liverpool and Real Madrid, and it makes for rather shocking reading.
Toni Kroos’s rating immediately jumps out, having been awarded a mere 3/10 for his display.
Three out of ten. And he was on the winning team.
