Champions League draw: Liverpool, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs best/worst-case scenarios

We now know the 32 teams that will compete in the 2022/23 Champions League group stage.

On Tuesday and Wednesday night, the final qualifiers took place and all the Pots have been locked in. The group stage draw will take place later this evening at 17:00 BST.

There will be six British sides with four Premier League representatives as well as Celtic and Rangers.

So, who could face who?

Well, we know that no clubs from the same country can face each other in the group – that means no Manchester City vs Liverpool in the groups.

Pot 1 is made up of the Champions League holders, the Europa League holders, and the champions of the top six association countries based on their UEFA coefficients. Pots 2, 3 and 4 contain the remaining teams, ranked by order of their UEFA ranking.

So ahead of the draw, we’ve decided to work out what the best and worst-case scenarios would be the four English sides in the Champions League.

With Man City in Pot 1, their scenarios are a little different to the other three clubs (Liverpool, Chelsea and Spurs) who all find themselves in Pot 2.

Let’s take a look at who each English side could face:

Worst-case scenario: Barcelona, Inter Milan, Marseille

Best-case scenario: RB Leipzig, Sporting Lisbon, Maccabi Haifa

As Premier League champions, Man City find themselves in Pot 1. It means they will avoid Real Madrid, Bayern Munich and PSG. And with three English sides in Pot 2 which are unable to be drawn in the same group as Man City, Pep Guardiola’s side know they will face one of Barcelona, Juventus, Atletico Madrid, Sevilla or RB Leipzig.
