Celtic “will be desperate” to sign £6m “beast” this summer, he’s their new Van Dijk - opinion

Celtic will be desperate to sign Cameron Carter-Vickers on a permanent basis in the summer transfer window.

That’s according to Alan Hutton, who stated his belief in a recent interview with Football Insider that, with the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Burnley and Leicester City all reported to be interested in stealing the Tottenham Hotspur centre-back from Celtic’s grasp this summer, Ange Postecoglou and his side will do everything in their power to retain the services of the defender beyond the end of the season.

Regarding the Hoops’ hopes of sealing a £6m deal for the USA international, Hutton said: “I think Celtic will be desperate to tie him down this summer. He’s come in and shown his quality.

“There were question marks over him when he came in, and I was among those not sure about him. But fair play to him, he’s come in and had a run of games. He looks confident. However, I do think there will be other teams watching him and making enquiries to Tottenham about what sort of fee they would be after.

“I don’t think the £6m fee, especially if Celtic get into the Champions League, will be out of their budget. If you are to move forward and keep progressing, they will want to keep hold of an asset like him.”

Considering just how impressive Carter-Vickers has been since his season-long loan switch to Parkhead last summer, it is not difficult to understand why Postecoglou will be desperate to secure the 24-year-old’s permanent signing this summer.

Indeed, over his 28 Premiership appearances this season, the £2.7m-rated centre-back has been imperious in the heart of the Celtic defence, helping his side keep 15 clean sheets, as well as making an average of 1.2 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 4.2 clearances and winning 5.9
