Celtic handed fresh injury boost as footage emerges, Postecoglou will be buzzing - opinion

Celtic have been handed a huge injury boost regarding Mikey Johnston.

Having not featured for Celtic since the club’s 4-0 Scottish Cup win over Raith Rovers back in mid-February, a game in which the left-winger was withdrawn after 54 minutes due to injury, the 22-year-old now appears to be closing in on a return to first-team football, after footage emerged of the Scotland U21 international featuring for Celtic B in the reserve side’s 5-0 win over Partick Thistle in the Glasgow Cup on Tuesday.

While Johnston has not been a guaranteed starter for Celtic since Ange Postecoglou’s arrival at the club last summer – featuring from the off just five times this season – the seemingly impending return of the forward will nevertheless have left the 56-year-old Bhoys boss buzzing.

Indeed, with just eight games remaining of the 2021/22 Premiership campaign, and the title race being the closest it has been in recent memory, the return of a wide attacking player ahead of what is sure to be an extremely tense and hard-fought run-in will undoubtedly come as a huge boost to the Greek-Australian coach and his side, as the rotation of his front three will be absolutely necessary if Postecoglou is to keep his starters as fit as possible over the remainder of the season.

As such, while Johnston may not have been one of the main protagonists in Celtic’s bid to reclaim their Scottish championship crown this season, the academy product could yet play an extremely crucial role in the Hoops’ push for the title – especially with the likes of Kyogo Furuhashi and David Turnbull remaining sidelined.
