So in the end it might be considered as a sub optimal campaign.

For the second season in succession Brendan Rodgers has come up one trophy short of a full house and, make no mistake, there will be Celtic fans out there who will believe that he has underachieved by falling at the final hurdle.

They don’t like being branded as entitled.

But, even so, there is a significant section of these supporters who have become accustomed over the last decade or so to believing that this period of absolute, unchallenged supremacy ought to be considered as the new normal.

And, do you know what? They can’t really be blamed for it either. It’s only natural.

For a generation all they have ever known is triumph, trophies and trebles to such an extent that they will go into next season with the mindset that anything less than a domestic clean sweep would be a major black mark against the manager’s name.

Should he fail for a third time to fill the trophy cabinet up it will be regarded as a let down or a damp squib. And, the truth of the matter is, this is not a healthy place for them to be in.

It’s all the fault of Rodgers, of course. It was him who started this period of unprecedented dominance and it is he who continues to drive the expectation level around his club somewhere into the stratosphere.

In recent weeks he attempted to inject some realism into the equation by insisting repeatedly that these are not normal times. He is right.

Normality has never been trampled over quite like this before.

The problem is, Celtic’s people aren’t listening. Why should they?

They should have been celebrating again at the weekend and they may still be wondering why on earth their team blew a Scottish Cup Final which was there for the taking. Celtic
