The scenes during Euro 2022 will live long in the memory. The nation was gripped with Lioness fever as England made history by beating Germany to lift the trophy at a sold-out Wembley Stadium. But the legacy of that tournament – which saw 16 nations battle it out across a total of 31 games in 10 venues from Wembley to Rotherham – has been huge for the women’s game.
Close to 575,000 fans watched the matches live, many of them attending a women’s football match for the first time, while more than 365 million people tuned in on TV from 195 countries. The sport boomed on social media as fans found their new heroes, while money began pouring into the sport.
In the past three years since that tournament, the game has just continued to grow in terms of awareness, investment, publicity and interest. So the news that the UK is so far the only nation in the running to host the 2035 World Cup is something everyone associated with the sport should be excited and delighted about – and the December edition of the Mirror's Women's Football News is certainly that.
If it is confirmed when the final decision on the hosts is made in April that football is coming home, it will see 48 teams competing in what will be a truly stunning festival of football. A list of 22 venues across all four nations have been put forward by the UK bidding team including the new Old Trafford, Wembley, Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium, Glasgow’s Hampden Park, Belfast’s Windsor Park and Newcastle’s St James’ Park. And although that list will be whittled down once the decision on the host nation is confirmed, by the size of the stadiums put forward, organisers are expecting big crowds.
