Cavan man Alan O'Mara named new New York football boss

There is a new man in charge in the Big Apple with the New York GAA announcing Alan O'Mara as their new manager ahead of the 2024 inter-county season.

O'Mara, a member of the Westmeath NY club and a former inter-county goalkeeper with Cavan, has also set up his back-room team with Tyrone man Ronan McGinley coming in as coach. McGinley previous played for New York.

Incoming selectors include Jeff Farrell, David McNamara and Dean O'Donnell. They have also appointed a player development coach, Mick Cunningham, who played in goal for the American-based side last season.

A strength and conditioning coach, Sean Kelly, is also on the ticket as is physio Sinead Burns, who has experience working Stateside with NFL and NBA athletes.

A statement read: "The NYGAA looks forward to an exciting season ahead with this new leadership team, confident that their collective expeertise will steer the team to new successes. We invite our community and supporters to rally behind the team as they embark on this exhilerating journey in Gaelic football."

New York, who enjoyed their first championship win when beating Leitrim on penalties in this year's Connacht SFC championship, will face Mayo at the quarter-final stage next April.
