Cavan LGFA players contemplate strike action over expenses row

Cavan players have confirmed that they're contemplating strike action over their claim that the county board are not paying agreed expenses.

Captain Neasa Byrd told the We Are Cavan podcast that a charter had been negotiated between the players and the county board in January, but that there have been issues with certain aspects of the plan ever since.

The charter covered six areas, one of which was expenses, with Byrd going on to say that some costs have been covered, but "not what was agreed that night on the charter."

One of the main points of contention involves mileage to attend training sessions in Cavan, with team manager Gerry Moane allegedly paying for a bus to bring players from Dublin to a recent session, and back again, out of his own pocket.

"We're in a very different situation this year in that we have 20 players based in Dublin, all between the ages of 18 - 26 with only one player working full-time," said Byrd.

"We had asked the county board that the girls who are driving down on Tuesday nights for training get expenses. One week, girls received €30 for driving down, which was four cars that got €30 [per car]. Then the next week, one car drove down and they got €30.

"Since that, we've received nothing more. Girls are constantly driving down the road, not getting a penny."

When the team suggested organising a fundraiser to cover some of their costs, they were told no by the county board without a proper explanation being offered, Byrd added.

Further issues have revolved around gear, with squad players being given one set of socks and a pair of shorts to cover them for their entire Division 2 Lidl League campaign.
