Cathy Ferguson, wife of former Man United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, dies at 84

Cathy Ferguson, the wife of former Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson, has passed away at the age of 84, as confirmed by the family.

The Ferguson family released a statement on Friday to announce the sad news.

"We are deeply saddened to confirm the passing of Lady Cathy Ferguson, which occurred yesterday. She is survived by her husband, three sons, two sisters, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild," the statement read.

"At this time, the family requests privacy."

Cathy had been married to Sir Alex since 1966, with the couple meeting while they were both working at a typewriter factory.

When he announced his retirement as the manager of United in 2013 after an unparalleled period of success with the Red Devils, Ferguson said: "My wife Cathy has been the cornerstone of my career, providing both stability and encouragement. Words cannot adequately express what this has meant to me."

In 2002, Cathy played a pivotal role in convincing Ferguson to reverse his retirement decision at that point, leading him to manage the club for another 11 years before eventually stepping down following the passing of Cathy's sister.

In an interview for the 2021 documentary titled 'Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In,' Cathy shared that Sir Alex had taken her to the cinema on their first date.

"He bought me a box of liquorice allsorts at the cinema, of which he ate all of them, and a local newspaper when we came out. That was my idea of a romantic day," she said.

"We got married at Glasgow registry office in 1966, and that marked the beginning. I went to work, and he pursued his career in football."

Manchester United released a statement expressing their heartfelt condolences to Sir Alex Ferguson and his family on Lady Cathy's passing.
