Catalans Dragons confirm Tom Johnstone capture as winger signs two-year deal

Tom Johnstone has officially been unveiled as a Catalans player in 2023. The Wakefield Trinity winger has signed a two-year deal with the Dragons, ending months of speculation over his future.

Wakefield did table a new deal to keep Johnstone at the club beyond this year, but he has instead opted to sign for last year's Grand Finalists and start afresh in France. The winger has suffered with injuries throughout the majority of his time at Trinity, and is currently sidelined with no return date yet pencilled in.

But this will be his final few months as a Wakefield player before he makes the move to the south of France. He will be in direct competition with fellow England international Tom Davies and French star Fouad Yaha for a regular place in the Catalans side.

Johnstone said: "“Firstly I would to thank Steve McNamara for the opportunity to come here. Once I’d spoken to him and heard what the club are aspiring to achieve, I knew it was perfect fit for me.

“My main goal is to win a Grand Final and it would be incredible to do that and create history here. I am really excited and grateful for the opportunity to play for such a great club. It’s easy to see the passion the fans have and I can’t wait to play for them next year.”

Johnstone did admit though that he was leaving Wakefield, the club with whom he has spent his entire career to date, with a heavy heart.

“I’ve loved my time here throughout all the ups and the downs," he said. "Wakefield is really special to me. They were the club that gave me a chance and brought me through when other clubs perhaps said I wouldn’t quite make it.
