Castle Douglas teenager qualifies for Scotland's youth international fly fishing team

A teenager from Castle Douglas has qualified to fish for Scotland’s youth international fly fishing team.

Dylan McRobert, a member of Castle Douglas and District Angling Association, has been a keen salmon and trout fisher for three years.

Having finally reached the age where he was old enough to try to qualify, dad David signed the 13-year-old up for the two qualifying rounds – one at Harelaw Trout Fishery and the second at Lake of Menteith.

The weather at Harelaw was shocking with strong wind and rain all day but Dylan managed to catch a nice fish, putting him fifth after the first round – only the top 16 making the team.

It was rather windy at the Lake of Menteith, meaning another hard day in the boat, but Dylan headed straight to the top to try to find calmer water.

He managed a good fish early but an extremely tough day followed, with that the only one for him to weigh in.

However, with only 40 fish caught the whole day, it was a nailbiter for the results.

After the wait and the calculations, the top three were announced, with Dylan announced as best newcomer and in the 2024 team.

He was delighted that after three years of hard fishing and learning with his dad he has reached the point where he can go out and fish for his country.
