Casper Ruud into US Open final as first Grand Slam title, No. 1 ranking within reach

NEW YORK — Casper Ruud moved into his second Grand Slam final of the year by beating Karen Khachanov 7-6 (5), 6-2, 5-7, 6-2.

The No. 5 seed from Norway will play either No. 3 Carlos Alcaraz or No. 22 Frances Tiafoe on Sunday in the final.

The men's world No. 1 ranking will be on the line in the final if Alcaraz defeats Tiafoe in the later semifinal match Friday. If Alcaraz loses, Ruud will end the tournament at No. 1, win or lose.

Ruud lost to Rafael Nadal at the French Open his first time playing for a major title.
