Former Aston Villa striker Gabriel Agbonlahor has admitted Aston Villa may have to come to terms with losing exciting prospect Carney Chukwuemeka due to the contract uncertainty surrounding the player.
Chukwuemeka, 18, was an unused substitute in the match yesterday against a side that have been rumoured to be monitoring the situation of the player currently, as Villa lost 1-0 to Arsenal. Despite watching from the sidelines, Chukwuemeka has been used frequently so far this season, making a total of nine appearances in the Premier League.
Chukwuemeka's current deal at Villa looks set to expire in 2023, with a breakthrough in terms of negotiations yet to occur with the player and his representation. recently questioned Steven Gerrard regarding a possible update on negotiations with the young midfielder. Where the boss stated: "No, no. As far as I know they haven't progressed. We've done everything we can from our side to try and make them progress. I'm not sure where that's up to at the moment."
One player who will be well aware of what negotiations with Villa are like at a young age is Agbonlahor, who after signing his first professional deal at the club in 2005, agreed to a four-year extension in 2007. His manager Martin O'Neil stated this at the time of the deal: "Like with any young player he has had the occasional up and down, but overall he has been excellent and the new contract is for a couple more years on top of what he already had left.
"I keep repeating myself but I am sure Gabby would have been more than content with playing maybe 12 to 15 games at the start of the season."
