Carlton Palmer shares opinion on transfer situation involving Middlesbrough, Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest

The immediate future of Middlesbrough star Marcus Tavernier is a situation that is capturing the attention of a lot at the moment.

The Boro playmaker, who has been generating attention from the higher division, has been the subject of rejected bids from Premier League new-boys Bournemouth and Nottingham Forest, as per a report from 90min.com.

The attacking midfielder, who put in consistently excellent performances whilst operating in several different roles last time out.

Assessing his current situation ahead of the new campaign, Carlton Palmer told Football League World: “He’s 23. He ticks a lot of boxes. He’s very versatile. He played 48 games for Middlesbrough last season. Both Neil Warnock and Chris Wilder rate the boy very, very highly.

“Forest have put in a 10 million pound bid and that’s been rejected out of hand.

“Middlesbrough do not want to let him go and said they won’t let him go for less than a fee for £15 million. So its whether you see that as a fee that you’re prepared to pay for somebody who’s untested in the Premier League

“For a squad player, it’s an awful lot of money, so we’ll have to see. Middlesbrough do not want to sell him, they really want to get promotion next season.”

The verdict

A player who possesses the ability to operate at Premier League level, Tavernier has a lot of desirable attributes that would be of benefit to both of the clubs who are currently in pursuit.

It remains to be seen if either of the two clubs would up their bids to £15 million, with that being quite a jump from the original £10 million that has been offered.

Of course, it is a bug jump to the Premier League, and whilst the promise and ability he has shown would justify a top-flight move, it is always a gamble.
