Bournemouth play waiting game over Middlesbrough midfielder also wanted by Nottingham Forest

Bournemouth remain hopeful that Marcus Tavernier will be the next player through the door at Vitality Stadium but are still waiting for Middlesbrough’s response to their bid made earlier this week for the midfielder.

Scott Parker has made the Boro academy graduate one his top priorities following the acquisitions of Joe Rothwell and Ryan Fredericks, as the Cherries head coach looks to bolster his midfield options.

A bid in the region of £10m has been submitted but contrary to reports that the Cherries are in “advanced talks” with the 23-year-old, Dorset Live understands negotiations are not yet at that stage, with Nottingham Forest also keen on Tavernier.

The midfielder is out of contract in the summer of 2023 and if Boro wish to secure a decent fee for him then now is the time to sell, with manager Chris Wilder accepting of the market and the opportunity for him to play at a higher level.

"I don’t want to lose arguably one of our top players but understanding other bits about the game and the attraction of the Premier League" said Wilder earlier this week after a 3-0 friendly win over League One Morecambe.

"As you have seen tonight, Tav has took it in his stride. I thought his performance and his goal was excellent, he’s a major player for us. I don’t know what is around the corner but he’s a good player. But obviously I want him to be a good player in a red shirt.”

Tavernier made his debut for Boro in 3-0 victory over Scunthorpe in the Carabao Cup in 2017 before scoring his first goal for the club against Bournemouth in the following round at Vitality Stadium in a 3-1 defeat.

Last season Tavernier made 44 league starts for Wilder’s side last season, scoring five goals and chipping in with a further five assists.
