Care worker left in coma after being hit by car in Salford

A care worker is in an induced coma after being hit by a car as she crossed the road to catch a bus. Preeti Dhunna, 30, is in intensive care at Salford Royal Hospital following the crash on Cromwell Road on Saturday (Dec 23).

The driver, a 27-year-old man, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and drug driving offences and later bailed. Following the crash, a stretch of the road was cordoned off by police with drivers being urged to avoid the area.

Parts of Seaford Road and Lower Broughton Road were also taped off as investigations were carried out. Speaking today Ms Dhunna's brother Nikhil Dhunna told of the family's anguish.

Mr Dhunna, who lives in Sheffield, has spent the last few days at his sister's bedside. He said she suffered a bleed on the brain, a broken pelvis and a broken ankle in the crash.

He added: "I'm absolutely broken. She's my elder sister.

"You can't imagine what it's like seeing her like that with all those machines in her. You can't even talk to her, she can't respond.

"I'm her only family in the UK. Our parents are in India. They are absolutely devastated.

"I am trying to arrange a visa for them to come over, but because of the holidays I can't get through to anyone. She needs her loved ones around her. She needs to see friendly faces.

"We're at a very critical stage. We're fighting for her survival."
