Cardiff University job cuts as '400 roles go with nursing school gone and many subjects lost' – live
Staff said they are in shock today after Cardiff University reportedly announced 400 jobs are to go amid cuts to degree courses. The University College Union (UCU) said it was told by the vice-chancellor (VC) that degree courses including nursing, music, modern foreign languages, ancient history, and ancient languages are to go.
Joe Whitfield, lecturer in Hispanic studies and UCU chair at Cardiff University and who attended the meeting at which VC Wendy Larner announced the cuts, said: "It is very bad. People are in shock and very distressed."
A university spokesman said the university would make a statement later today. The university is grappling a projected £28m deficit in its current financial year.
