Cardiff City weighing up move for Championship defender

Championship side Cardiff City are weighing up whether to approach Millwall regarding the services of Mahlon Romeo ahead of the summer window, as per a report from Wales Online.

The 26-year-old spent the 2021/22 campaign on loan at League One outfit Portsmouth, taking a surprising step down despite being a regular for the Lions during 2020/21 season, making 35 league appearances for Gary Rowett’s men.

He made the same number of third-tier appearances for Danny Cowley’s side, managing to remain fit for the vast majority of his spell at Fratton Park and operating both as a wing-back and a more defensive full-back on the south coast.

With Pompey yet to move for him permanently, this could open the door to other sides to recruit the 26-year-old, especially with Danny McNamara now establishing himself as one of the first names on the teamsheet at The Den.

The Bluebirds, meanwhile, may need a new wing-back on the right-hand side if Perry Ng remains in a more central position because it’s currently unclear whether Leeds United’s Cody Drameh will return to the Welsh capital following a successful loan spell at the Cardiff City Stadium.

The same Wales Online report has revealed sources close to the outlet believe he will attract interest from clubs currently above the Welsh side, though a return hasn’t been ruled out at this stage.

It may take Romeo a while to get back up to speed in the second tier once again after plying his trade in the third tier – but he could be a useful addition considering he still has plenty of experience under his belt at this level.
