Cardiff City 2-2 Colchester United (3-0 penalties): Jak Alnwick the penalty hero for Bluebirds in Carabao Cup clash

A flawless penalty shootout display from goalkeeper Jak Alnwick saw Cardiff City scrape past League Two outfit Colchester United in round one of the Carabao Cup.

Ike Ugbo struck the decisive penalty after Sheyi Ojo and Mahlon Romeo had scored theirs, but Alnwick saved all three of the penalties he faced after the game ended 2-2 in normal time.

Cardiff enjoyed a dream start to the game with goals from Rubin Colwill and Kion Etete, but Colchester hit back with a quick one-two before the break, with strikes from John Akinde and Joe Taylor.

The Bluebirds came close a number of times, including Etete rattling the crossbar, but struggled to strike that killer blow. They even had a man advantage in the dying minutes, too, after Samson Tovide's horror high tackle on Jamilu Collins, which saw his boot catch the Bluebirds man's head.

And the penalty shootout began shakily, with Colwill missing the first one for City. Fortunately for him, Alnwick was unbeatable.

Erol Bulut made 10 changes from the side which drew to Leeds United on the weekend, keeping only Alnwick between the sticks.

It was wholesale changes other than that, which was to be expected, and as such there was a disjointed nature to City's early work. But they did eventually settle into a rhythm and pose some questions, chiefly through the ingenuity of Colwill and Ollie Tanner.

Colwill was a thorn in the visitors' side and almost netted after 15 minutes when he produced a stunning spin in the box, beating his defender in the process, before lashing a shot across goal. He was denied by a stunning Owen Goodman save.
