Cardiff City 2-1 Swindon Town: Colwill and Ashford strikes send Bluebirds through to Carabao Cup second round

Cardiff City advanced through to the second round of the Carabao Cup thanks to goals from Welsh duo Cian Ashford and Rubin Colwill in their 2-1 win over Swindon Town.

It wasn't perfect, and the League Two side gave Cardiff quite a scare on a number of occasions, with that defence looking shaky at times. But they held out for the win and are in the hat for round two.

Barry-Murphy fielded a stronger side than many might have anticipated, however the defence certainly needs to gel, while there were attacking players who simply needed minutes and to find some form.

But against a side a division below them, City will have wanted to impose themselves on the tie. And, despite an early chance from Billy Bodin which saw the ball whistle past Nathan Trott's upright in the second minute, it was a dominant start from the Bluebirds.

After banging the door down for 20 minutes, City finally found the back of the net. Isaak Davies struck a lovely corner on to the head of Joel Bagan, whose powerful low effort was tipped away by Connor Ripley - but into the danger zone. Ashford will not have an easier finish this season, tapping home from just a couple of yards out to hand the hosts the advantage.

Cardiff then relaxed and really started to play some nice stuff. Again, though, they had one scare when Ehibhatiomhan broke through and danced past Bagan and Will Fish, before slotting his one-v-one effort narrowly wide.
