Captaincy a success for Canterbury Golf Club's Angela Jones after another victory for England's women in Senior Home Internationals

Canterbury Golf Club’s Angela Jones captained England's women's team to victory in the Senior Home Internationals for the second year running.

Non-playing captain Jones steered her side to an opening 5.5-3.5 win over Ireland at Pyle and Kenfig Golf Club, near Porthcawl in South Wales.

They then beat Scotland 5-4 and finished off with a crushing 7-2 win against Wales to retain the Sue Johnson Trophy.

England Golf praised Angela on their website, saying: ''England’s women have excelled to win all three contests at this year’s Senior Home Internationals. The team was skippered superbly by women’s captain Angela Jones.''

Jones said: ''I’m very proud of all the team, they played brilliantly all week. They did all the hard work, hitting the balls, I just organised everything.

''The captain’s role for England is non-playing. There is too much to do and if you tried to combine them either your golf or the captaincy would suffer.''

Canterbury women’s champion Jones also played in and captained a Kent senior women’s side, including Canterbury’s Ali Kingston and Fiona Cameron, that won their annual series against Middlesex, Surrey and Sussex to retain the Mulligan Larson Trophy.

Kent played their home matches at Canterbury and retained their title after beating Middlesex by 0.5 points overall with three wins and one loss against second-placed Middlesex’s two wins, one halved match and one loss.
