Captain in sole charge won't work: Khawaja

Having Australia's Test captain as the boss of the national side is not a viable plan in the opinion of opener Usman Khawaja.

Following the messy exit of Justin Langer as Australia coach last weekend, ex-Test skipper Ian Chappell said it was the captain who should "run the show" and the position of coach "makes very little difference".

Khawaja disagrees with that sentiment however, saying the dynamic between the two positions is a vital ingredient for success.

"I've never seen a captain of the Australian cricket team in charge of the whole cricket team - ever. It's just not the way," Khawaja said.

"You have a captain and coach for a reason.

"They're a pretty important cog in the system. They work together, especially now that the coach is a selector ... you need to have that relationship, really strong relationship, and then that filters down to the boys."

Langer's relationship with both Test captain Pat Cummins and limited-overs captain Aaron Finch has been under a cloud after both were involved in an emergency meeting in August to address player concerns about Langer's coaching style.

After that meeting Langer coached Australia to the Twenty20 World Cup title and a comprehensive Ashes triumph on home soil.

His position remained under a cloud however and when Cummins failed to endorse Langer continuing as national team coach during a media event in Sydney last week it appeared the writing was on the wall for the 51-year-old.

Khawaja, who captains Queensland at state level, said in his experience it is important to have a good working relationship between the captain and coach.
