Cape Town City too hot for flavourless Kaizer ‘Chips’

Cape Town City took a big bite out of Kaizer Chiefs’ confidence a day after Amakhosi announced their venture into the culinary world with their chips brand.

The Citizens beat Amakhosi 1-0 at FNB Stadium, notching up their fourth successive DStv Premiership win at the iconic venue – signalling their dominance against Chiefs in Johannesburg. 

Khanyiso Mayo’s header just before the hour mark helped City register back-to-back league wins for only the second time this season. Both teams were in search of some consistency in what has been an up-and-down start to their league campaign. 

That inconsistency was magnified on the side of Amakhosi who have gone from being the country’s cup kings to going eight years without a trophy. Two unrelated events that took place a day before this game highlighted the awkward position Amakhosi find themselves in. 

Chiefs, who are the most supported team in the country and a marketing juggernaut in SA sport, launched their brand of potato chips on Monday morning. By the time the day ended, the Premier Soccer League's disciplinary committee had slapped the club with a R200 000 fine for the second incident of their supporters’ misbehaviour in a space of two months. That fine also went with a risk of playing one home game in front of an empty stadium should Chiefs' supporters misbehave again in the next six months. 

While the club is the undisputed king of the marketing space, they have fallen behind so much in the football department that the only victories their supporters can celebrate are those registered by their marketing department.
