Caoimhin Kelleher shares moment with Alisson after heroic display in Carabao Cup win
Caoimhin Kelleher was the hero as Liverpool beat Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final on Sunday evening.
Kelleher is backup to Alisson Becker but was given the chance to start at Wembley as he had been pivotal in Liverpool’s run to the final.
Speaking of the decision to start Kelleher before the game, Jurgen Klopp said, per the Daily Mail: “I don’t see any reason why we should not do this. He deserves it. He brought the team here.”
It was a bold move by Klopp given Alisson is arguably the best goalkeeper in the world.
But Kelleher repaid Klopp’s faith as he was outstanding throughout.
He made numerous saves during the match as neither side could break the deadlock.
The Irishman’s most most notable save was when he kept out Romelu Lukaku in the dying moments of stoppage-time.
The game went to penalties and Kelleher, despite coming close, was unable to save any of Chelsea’s penalties.
After every outfield player on the pitch were successful in their spot-kicks, Kelleher stepped up for Liverpool.
And he showed no nerves whatsoever as he slammed his penalty past Kepa Arrizabalaga and into the top corner.
It proved to be the winning penalty as Kepa then skied his spot-kick moments later.
